Developers of a project billed as the country’s first “carbon-positive” hotel placed the last beam on the building Wednesday and said the hotel in downtown Denver will be open for business around June 2024.The 13-story Populus hotel by Urban Villages will be highly visible not only because of its location — next to Civic Center park — but also because of its design. The triangular building’s exterior will evoke the bark of an aspen tree, with the inset windows mimicking the dark, eye-shaped marks left on an aspen’s bark when branches break off.The hotel’s name, Populus, comes from the scientific name for quaking aspen: Populus tremuloides. Studio Gang, which is based in Chicago and has projects around the world, is the hotel’s architect. The exterior “lids” of the windows will shade the interior and channel rainwater to keep the facade looking fresh, according to Studio Gang’s website.Another feature that Denver-based Urban Villag...Avs flip second-round draft pick for Ross Colton in trade with Lightning; J.T. The Avalanche acquired the rights to restricted free agent Ross Colton from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the No. 37 pick in the 2023 draft, the team announced Wednesday morning.Colorado flipped the early second-round pick after receiving it via trade the previous day from Montreal. The Avalanche essentially traded Alex Newhook, also an RFA, to end up with Colton from Tampa and the No. 31 overall pick (a first-rounder) from Montreal. The Avs have added two centers this offseason while retaining their No. 27 overall pick and obtaining another first-rounder. With Ryan Johansen and Colton, they have retooled their depth in the middle of the ice behind Nathan MacKinnon. There’s a domino effect, however. J.T. Compher will go to the open market as an unrestricted free agent July 1 and is unlikely to reach a new contract agreement with the Avalanche, a source told The Post on Wednesday. By Riazat Butt | Associated PressMINA, Saudi Arabia — Hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims on Wednesday braved intense heat to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. With morning temperatures rising past 42 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Farenheit), huge crowds of pilgrims walked or took buses to the vast Jamarat complex just outside the holy city of Mecca, where large pedestrian bridges lead past three wide pillars representing the devil.Using pebbles collected the night before at a campsite known as Muzdalifa, the pilgrims stone the pillars. It’s a reenactment of the story of the Prophet Ibrahim — known as Abraham in Christian and Jewish traditions — who is said to have hurled stones at Satan to resist temptation. The ceremony was marred by tragedy on a number of occasions in the 1990s and 2000s, when hundreds died in stampedes during the stoning ritual. Saudi authorities have since built an expanded network of massive pedestria...Latest news
