KLIETZ, Germany — Fifteen of 17 targets hit with the first shot. That’s the score for a Ukrainian crew on a Leopard 1A5 main battle tank on a training ground in Germany. The four-man Ukrainian crew did miss two moving targets and a colleague of Marlow’s added that they need to work on their speed in the Leopard, a 42-ton behemoth that’s now helping equip the Ukrainian military.Berlin has authorized the export of as many as 178 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine, most from stocks held by Germany and Denmark. They were examining whether the group might have been migrants who entered the country through the nearby border. The discovery in the Avanta area of the city of Alexandroupolis came as hundreds of firefighters battled dozens of wildfires breaking out across the country, fanned by gale-force winds. Poland’s leader says Russia’s moving tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, shifting regional security

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:32:08 GMT

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said Tuesday that Russia already is in the process of shifting some short-range nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus, a move that Duda said will shift the security architecture of the region and the entire NATO military alliance. Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko said last month that Moscow already had shipped some of its tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus after announcing the plan in March. The U.S. and NATO haven’t confirmed the move. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg denounced Moscow’s rhetoric as “dangerous and reckless,” but said in July that the alliance hadn’t seen any change in Russia’s nuclear posture.Tactical nuclear weapons are intended for use on the battlefield and have a short range and a low yield compared with much more powerful nuclear warheads fitted to long-range missiles. Russia said it would maintain control over those it sends to Belarus.D...

Some states reject federal money to find and replace dangerous lead pipes

ST. LOUIS (AP) — As the Biden administration makes billions of dollars available to remove millions of dangerous lead pipes that can contaminate drinking water and damage brain development in children, some states are turning down funds. Washington, Oregon, Maine and Alaska declined all or most of their federal funds in the first of five years that the mix of grants and loans is available, The Associated Press found. Some states are less prepared to pay for lead removal projects because, in many cases, the lead must first be found, experts said. And communities are hesitant to take out loans to search for their lead pipes.States shouldn’t “shrug their shoulders” and pass up funds, said Erik Olson, a health and food expert at the environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council.“It’s troubling that a state would decide to take a complete pass on the funding because part of the reason for the funding is to figure out whether you even have lead,” Olson said. The B...
