Malkin’s late goal lifts Penguins past Ovechkin, Caps 4-3

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Evgeni Malkin remains a live wire. Even now, 17 seasons into a career that is likely destined for the Hall of Fame, there’s an unpredictability the Pittsburgh Penguins star plays with that can be both endearing and exasperating to teammates and coaches alike. The latest proof came against Washington on Saturday. An untimely roughing penalty in the third period helped spark a Capitals’ rally from a three-goal deficit. Malkin made up for it by burying a breakaway with 1:20 left in regulation that lifted the Penguins to a 4-3 victory.“His care factor and his compete level for me is off the charts and that’s what I love about him and usually when the stakes are high that’s when he’s at his best,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “He gets a huge goal for us tonight at a key time.”Malkin’s 25th goal of the season — a low wrist shot to the far post — helped the Penguins avoid a potentially messy collapse. Pittsburgh appeared to be ready to cruis...

I went into the dressing room after the game and just said that I was proud of the work that was put in, proud of where we got to clinch tonight to be one of three teams that have an X next to their name,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. “All the work that’s been put in, the adversity they face during the year. The adversity they face right at the start of the season to where we’ve got to now.”New Jersey could have clinched its first postseason berth since 2018 with a win, but it happened before their first intermission when the Florida Panthers lost to the New York Rangers in regulation.“I had a lesser role then,” said Jesper Bratt, who was a rookie for the Devils in 2017-18. “I would say at a younger age, it’s kind of like you think that just because it h...

American League East preview: Another powerhouse division in 2023?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:09:20 GMT

Season after season, the American League East is one of the most competitive divisions in Major League Baseball. Some years, it’s one of the most compelling races in all of North American professional sports. In 2018, the Red Sox won their third consecutive division title and a franchise-record 108 regular-season games. The Yankees finished second, with 100 wins, and entered the playoffs via Wild Card. The Rays “only” won 90 games that year, a total that would’ve made them a Wild Card team in the AL Central or NL East, but instead, was only good for third place in their own division and no postseason berth. In last year’s postseason, the first with the new expanded format, three of the six AL teams were from the East. It’s high-stakes baseball at its best, and it’s always brilliant or brutal, depending on the year and your team of choice. But it will be interesting to see how the new balanced schedule impacts the annual divisional melee. The 2023 Red Sox: Underwhelming, or underdogs?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:09:20 GMT

No one expects much from the 2023 Red Sox.Outside of the organization, anyway. The outside world sees an organization that spent the fall and winter letting go of proven winners. Xander Bogaerts, JD Martinez, Nathan Eovaldi, Christian Vázquez, Matt Barnes, and many others are gone. The 2018 championship squad, the team with more regular-season wins than any other in Red Sox history, has been torn down to its last three studs: Rafael Devers, Chris Sale, and Ryan Brasier. In turn, it appears the Red Sox constructed a roster full of newcomers, question marks, lateral moves, and short-term contracts, with a few high-priced talents sprinkled on top of the Rocky Road sundae. It makes sense that many are ready to write off this team that finished last twice in three years, and then got rid of most of their proven champions. Most projections have them finishing last in their division again; the kindest evaluators say they might be a fourth-place team. It’s been a long, tumultuous offseaso...
