Colorado linebacker Demouy Kennedy during a football scrimmage on Aug. 19, 2023, at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo. (University of Colorado Athletics)During the offseason, when Demouy Kennedy’s name came up, Colorado linebackers coach Andre Hart and defensive coordinator Charles Kelly would light up.They were excited about the potential of the Alabama transfer because of his size and speed at linebacker. At the mid-point of the season, however, Kennedy has barely played. That could change when the Buffaloes (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) host Stanford (1-4, 0-3) at Folsom Field on Friday (8:20 p.m., ESPN).“At practice this week, he’s been starting,” Hart said Wednesday. “So he should be getting in this week, as long as he keeps continuing to progress like he has been.”It remains to be seen if Kennedy, who has played just 10 defensive snaps all season, will actually start or not, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if a new face was in the lineup. One of the intriguing stories of CU’s first half has been ...Men’s basketball notes: CU Buffs tabbed fifth in Pac-12 preseason poll

(Tyler Davis/CU Athletics)LAS VEGAS — Colorado head coach Tad Boyle rarely makes much noise about the annual Pac-12 Conference preseason media poll. Unless, of course, there is some glaring slight that could prove useful as a motivational tool.Yet when this year’s poll was released on Wednesday to kick off CU’s final appearance at the Pac-12 men’s basketball media day, slotting the Buffs fifth, a confident Boyle offered a single observation.“If we’re the fifth-best team in the Pac-12, the Pac-12’s pretty good this year,” Boyle said. “I like the combination of our returning players, our veterans, and the new young talent is about right. And we’ve had some really good practices. I think we’re 12 practices in, and this is a competitive group.”Two-time defending conference tournament champion Arizona took the top spot, landing 18 of the 22 first-place votes. Lifeless bodies and bags of body parts arriving in bedsheets. The scene at Shifa Hospital was a grisly reflection of the chaos around it. Even as workers mopped up blood and relatives rushed children with shrapnel wounds into surgery, explosions thundered in central Gaza City.Over the last five days, Israeli warplanes have pummeled the blockaded strip with an intensity that its war-weary residents had never experienced. The airstrikes have killed over 1,100 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Officials have not said how many civilians are among the dead, but aid workers warn that Israel’s decision to impose a “complete siege” on the crowded enclave of 2.3 million people is spawning a humanitarian catastrophe that touches nearly every one of them. The airstrikes hav...‘Coal war’ in Oakland could be settled by judge ruling in contract dispute

The fate of the long-running “coal war” in Oakland may come down to who a judge decides is to blame in a contract dispute between the city and one of its most prominent real-estate developers. In closing arguments Wednesday, attorneys for the city said developer Phil Tagami and corporate partner Insight Terminal Solutions failed to meet key deadlines in the construction of a large marine terminal that would ship bulk goods at the former Army Base in West Oakland.Tagami, however, contends that the city intentionally stalled the project in order to prevent the transport of coal through the harbor — having failed once before to ban coal from passing through Oakland altogether. The pollutant has proven to be politically toxic in Oakland. Environmental advocates have warned for years that coal dust mixed with the open air could worsen West Oakland’s air quality. The ensuing legal and public fight has put construction of the terminal on hold since it was first appro...The oldest kosher bakery in Oakland hits the market for $1

Fifteen girls and teenagers, they put (them) in the same room, threw in a hand grenade and it’s over,” Major Gen. Itai Veruv said.“This is a massacre. It’s a pogrom,” he said, recalling the brutal attacks on Jews in Eastern Europe in the 19th and early 20th century. The Israeli military led a group of journalists, including an Associated Press reporter, on a tour of this village a few miles from Israel’s fortified border with Gaza on Wednesday, following an extended battle to retake it from militants.
