‘Nuclear option’? Supersized housing projects are planned for Bay Area’s wealthiest cities. Is one coming to your neighborhood?

‘Nuclear option’? Supersized housing projects are planned for Bay Area’s wealthiest cities. Is one coming to your neighborhood? Eight-story condo buildings rising above the billionaire bedroom community of Los Altos Hills? Hundreds of apartments flanking the sprawling single-family subdivisions of Brentwood? A hundred and fifty homes perched high on a bucolic hillside in rural Marin County? These aren’t part of some fictional “Supersize the Suburbs” version of Monopoly. They’re among a growing number of jumbo housing projects developers are scoping out in the Bay Area’s most exclusive neighborhoods. And to the horror of some longtime residents, local officials could be helpless to halt construction. It’s all thanks to an until-recently forgotten provision in state housing law meant as a penalty for cities that fail to do their part to alleviate a deepening housing crisis. Developers have begun invoking the rule — dubbed the “builder’s remedy” — in hopes of pushing through projects that are much bigger than local zoning restrictions typically allow. So far thi...

There must be a better way to teach drivers all of Tesla’s bells and whistles: Roadshow

There must be a better way to teach drivers all of Tesla’s bells and whistles: Roadshow Q: I really enjoy driving my Tesla 3, with its many enhanced safety features and AI-like tools. It’s fun for me as a software developer, but many of my less computer savvy (and potential luddite) friends have difficulty mastering their new cars. My car’s manual is only available online. At well over 200 pages, who really reads this??? The net result is that a lot of the stuff is not understood and does not get used. And having rented several cars recently, I find there is no consistency in safety features between brands. Manufacturers need to provide a brief written “getting started guide” to help drivers use the vehicles. This would make for safer and saner driving.Steve Brock, San JoseA: You make excellent points.Q: I am new to motorcycle riding on the freeway. On my southbound approach to Highway 101 near Oakland Road in San Jose, I noticed some bumpy road, coupled with standing water. I immediately recognized this trouble spot from reading your column. Gwaltney is a “duty captain” with the all-volunteer organization.“I carry a radio around with me all the time, and Robert does, too,” said Bill Turville, another duty captain, noting that they keep up with emergency calls from Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers. “When I heard the call, I called Robert immediately, and I said, ‘Are you going?’ He said, ‘I’m on my way.’ So, I ...
