By Aaron Morrison | Associated PressREPRESA, California — The graduates lined up, brushing off their gowns and adjusting classmates’ tassels and stoles. As the graduation march played, the 85 men appeared to hoots and cheers from their families. They marched to the stage – one surrounded by barbed wire fence and constructed by fellow prisoners. For these were no ordinary graduates. Their black commencement garb almost hid their aqua and navy-blue prison uniforms as they received college degrees, high school diplomas and vocational certificates earned while they served time.Thousands of prisoners throughout the United States get their college degrees behind bars, most of them paid for by the federal Pell Grant program, which offers the neediest undergraduates tuition aid that they don’t have to repay. That program is about to expand exponentially next month, giving about 30,000 more students behind bars some $130 million in financial aid per year. The new rules, which overtu...

How many local school teachers or office workers can afford one of their million-dollar “affordable” units? The builder’s remedy and greedy developers represent completely unrealistic and destructive ways of solving the housing crisis. Blind San Francisco homeless man found not guilty after panhandling 'assault'

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A blind San Francisco homeless man who was accused of kicking a woman in the leg for refusing to give him $1 was found not guilty by a jury this week. Jurors acquitted Charles Underwood, 50, of misdemeanor assault and battery charges. While awaiting trial for the assault charge earlier this year, Underwood was subjected to a stay-away order from a seven-block area where he had been living on the streets. In May, he was arrested for returning to the area for panhandling. After his May arrest, Underwood took the extraordinary step of requesting to remain in jail in hopes that the court would send his case to trial faster amid a growing backlog of cases in San Francisco Superior Court. "No one should feel like they have to stay in jail just to get a trial," said Deputy Public Defender Sarah Hashemi.
